Erfolg bedeutet für sie: „’Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming‘.

Ilaria Renna: Be brave, not perfect!

From the series „Women and Technology“ in cooperation with the Federation of Austrian Industries Styria: Ilaria Renna works as Head of Software Engineering at NXP.
Chemistry, mathematics and physics are no effort for Ilaria Renna, they are fun. As Senior Project Manager at NXP Semiconductors, she does „what best suits my strengths.“

Italian Ilaria Renna has been working since 2014 as a Senior Project
Manager at NXP Semicondtuctors, a leading global provider of leading provider of secure connectivity solutions in the automotive, industrial & IoT, cellular and communications infrastructure sectors. During her physics studies with specializing in semiconductor physics, it became increasingly clear to her how much she enjoyed scientific topics such as chemistry, mathematics and physics.
Self-realizing, „I was able to choose the degree that best fit my strengths and passions and completed it in less than five years.“

„Our product line at NXP is focused on developing UWB (ultra-wideband) devices, and we want to position ourselves not only as a silicon supplier, but also as a player that offers our customers a whole system – and software plays a key role in this,“ explains the software program manager. She has accepted the challenge,
Achieving excellence in this area. „I want to make it a success story,“ Renna declares confidently. A new UWB project has just been launched. „UWB is part of the next generation of car access systems.“

She values NXP as an innovative company that tries new ideas and offers a strong product portfolio, but also the strong sense of community throughout the organization and the diversity of employees.

Be bold, not perfect!
The 44-year-old doesn’t believe that women have to prove them-selves more than men. Most of the time, women simply lack
self-confidence. „I have to prove myself with my skills and strengths that are required for a certain position. If I have those, I am a suitable candidate like all the others.“ Her advice for young women: „Be bold, not perfect! Build a network that supports you and learn to leverage your potential and strengths. Also take risks and stay outside your comfort zone.“

Renna explains the biggest differences between Austria and her native Italy this way: „Italian workers like the big picture, don’t see ‚just‘ their work. They work with a clear picture, but it takes a lot of time and doesn’t always add value. Here, people are more ’specialized‘ and focuson their work, which increases efficiency.“ The balancing act between family and job is something the mother of two daughters finds a difficult task that requires a lot of energy. „I focus on spending my time on what is valuable to me: Family, work and friends.“ She fuels her energy best by traveling and reading. „I also love sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, anything that involves the ocean.“

To her, success means, „Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.“ This is a quote from John Wooden that describes exactly how I feel.
To me, being successful means enjoying the journey of continuous self-improvement.“

She describes herself as an „eternalDreamer. I could fill a book with my dreams: Learning Russian, spending a year in Japan, training for the next marathon, and many, many others.“
